PXG (Parsons Xtreme Golf) was founded by serial entrepreneur Bob Parsons in January 2015. We will look at the path to success, the role of its founder, and who makes PGX golf clubs now.
PGX is not his first experience in building a company as he previously became a self-taught software expert starting Parsons Technology which built a popular accounting software application called MoneyCounts. This was sold to Intuit in September 1994, owners of Quicken and Quickbooks software.
This set Parsons on his way to bigger and better things.
With the backing from the sale of Parsons Technology, Parsons started an international website registration company, GoDaddy.com, in 1997. This is one of the largest domain registration companies globally. In 2011 a private equity consortium led by KKR & Co. L.P. and Silver Lake acquired 70% of GoDaddy.com valuing the company $2.3 billion.
Parsons established a holding company, Arizona-based YAM Worldwide Inc., in 2012 to place his business interests under one umbrella.
All of his current entrepreneurial ventures are contained in this holding company including golf (PXG (Parsons Xtreme Golf), Scottsdale National Golf Club), motorcycles (Harley-Davison of Scottsdale and GO AZ Motorcycles), real estate (YAM Properties), finance (YAM Capital), marketing (The Parsons Agency), philanthropy (The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation), and innovation.
Parsons entered the golfing world to design and create the world’s best golf clubs. To achieve this PXG has zero cost or time restraints in developing products that do not compromise on quality and innovation.
This can be attested to by the more than 200 patents that PXG holds in the line of golf club design.
Rob Parson’s intent to enter the golfing industry became apparent in September 2013 when he purchased 292-acre members-only golf, The Golf Club Scottsdale, and renamed it Scottsdale National Golf Club.
To enable the golf course to expand, Parsons purchased some undeveloped properties adjacent to his golf course including in 2014. At the same time, Rob announced plans to improve the newly acquired land by building a new clubhouse, practice facility, and second golf course on the property.
The Rise of PXG
Soon after launching PXG in January 2015, their first club was put in the bag by professional golfer Ryan Moore. Although there were only prototypes, Moore used PXG irons and wedges in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Parsons is not alone in his golfing venture as the PXG team are golf fanatics devoted to delivering game-changing innovation and the way golf aficionados perceive their clubs.
PXG golf equipment is built on the principles that:
- Must meet or exceed PXG’s high standard in rigid tolerances and performance
- It provides golfers with patented and innovative high-performance technologies
- Only use supreme materials
- The manufacturing process is unique to PXG
- Meticulous workmanship
- Soft feel and forgiveness without sacrificing performance
No PXG club will enter the market unless it’s a significant improvement on its competitors. The company is steadfast in its commitment to research numerous composites while exploring innovative technologies and finding distinctive properties to enhance the performance of a PXG branded club.
Due to its commitment to quality and innovation, PXG clubs are astounding and costly. Manufacturing a PXG golf club costs more than the retail price of its competitors.
Who Makes PXG Golf Clubs?
So, with all the information shared above, who makes PXG golf clubs?
PXG does not sell golf clubs off the shelf. All sets are custom fit for the golfer at their headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Underwriting the quality of PXG’s clubs, it is in use by several golfers on the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour. PXG professional staff includes Zach Johnson, Pat Perez, Jason Kokrak, Danny Lee, and Luke List to name a few.
LPGA players include former world number one Lydia Ko, Austin Ernst, Celine Boutier, Ryann O’Toole, Mina Harigae, and Anna Nordqvist.
With PXG pushing the limits in the golfing industry, they have stepped on some toes when TaylorMade Golf Company entered into a dispute with PXG regarding some patent infringements. Fortunately, this dispute was amicably settled under confidential details whereby each company will have specified rights to make club products under patent cross-licenses.
